Huntly Hairst - Food Festival
A celebration of food and farming
After four very successful years, The Huntly Hairst will be repeated for 2012 with the familiar format. It will be on the first weekend in September with a food festival which celebrates local producers, food and farming. While no longer combined with the traditional 'Halloween in Huntly' festival, it maintains a link and the Farmers Market will still be open as usual for the November weekend.
The Festival commences on 1 September this year with a larger than usual Farmers market and continues at Huntly Mart on the 2 September. There will be some further related events through until the Halloween festival. A number of competitions are being organised to run over this period.
For four years the Huntly Food & Farming Festival has been continuously developing into an event embracing the cultural aspects of the town as way of celebrating local food and rural life. The festival has never really forgotten its roots when it was still part of the Halloween festivities, which is rightly popular as it brings much needed light and fun in a time of year that is usual dismal and dark.
When the food and farming aspect of the Hairst begun to develop, it made sense to bring this part forward in the year to September when the harvest is in full swing and the locally grown food is plentiful. It also coincides with the Scottish Food Fortnight in the first week of September.
While both festivals do now coexist as independently run events, there is the idea that the F&F Hairst can develop eventually into a festival season which will find its conclusion with Halloween in Huntly, a delightful way to end a seasonal celebration.
